Fords Middle School is looking forward to hanging another championship banner in their gymnasium, thanks to the accomplishment of this season’s girls volleyball team. Meanwhile, the boys team will proudly be adding another winning year to their own banner, celebrating an undefeated season.
Though this season’s victory is the first girls volleyball championship, it is the third championship overall for a girls program at Fords Middle. For Coach Mihalia Sarris, who stepped into the position at FMS for the first time this spring, the winning season marked a triumphant start to her coaching career.
The girls finished their season 9-1 with their only loss coming at the hands of Avenel Middle School. They finished as the number one seed and faced off against Iselin for a chance to go to the championship. The girls won and were able to avenge their loss when they faced off against Avenel for the championship, winning in two straight sets 25-16 and 25-21. The final match was held at Fords Middle School.
With a 10-0 undefeated season, the boys volleyball team secured their second championship title, with the first coming during the 2018-2019 season. They were on track for a repeat performance that following year, but Covid shut down the world before they had a chance to defend their title. This is not the first time that the boys team has advanced to the championship game, which they have done twice previously. This year, they were finally able to break through in record fashion.
Coach Brian Evangelista could not be more proud of this group of boys coming through each game, especially with the pressure of finishing without a blemish on their overall record. The boys only dropped two sets all season, which are games best of three.
This marks the third undefeated team for the FMS boys program, which includes last year’s boys basketball and boys cross country teams.
