Families across the United States will celebrate Fathers Day on Sunday, June 21, 2026 by spending time with their fathers. Fathers Day is held each year to honor dads for their love, support and hard work. People celebrate by giving gifts, making cards, sharing meals and enjoying activities together.
It also honors grandfathers and other father figures who make a positive difference in people’s lives. It is celebrated every year on the third Sunday in June and recognizes the important role of fathers.
The holiday has a long history. Fathers Day was first celebrated in Spokane, Washington, on June 19, 1910. It was started by Sonora Smart Dodd to honor her Civil War veteran father who raised her and her five siblings as a single parent. She believed dads deserved a special day just like mothers did. For a long time, people only celebrated it in a few towns. It took many years to catch on, but in 1972, the U.S. government made it an official holiday celebrated every June.
Schools and communities often encourage children to thank their fathers and appreciate everything they do for us. Many fathers say that spending time with their families is the best gift they can receive. My brother said, “We do not need to buy big items from a store. Playing games outside and eating a big meal together as a family is the best way to celebrate.” As Fathers Day approaches, families are prepared to celebrate and create happy memories together.
Children happily make cards for their father. My sister added, “I love making colorful cards and surprises for our dad because it makes him smile and feel happy.” Many families spend the day having barbecues, going to parks, or watching movies together. Some people give their fathers special gifts, while others enjoy spending time with them.
