Morrissey of The Smiths and Robert Smith of The Cure started having drama in 1984 when Morrissey was interviewed by The Face, Because Morrissey states he doesn’t like Smith much and Smith replied saying he doesn’t like them either, which led to them having indirect arguments with each other.
Both The Cure and The Smiths are very well-liked bands who are very similar and share many fans, but despite this, they don’t particularly like each other.
In 1984, Morrissey was being interviewed by The Face, in which he stated “I expect he’s quite supportive of what we do, but I’ve never liked The Cure.” He also said how he thinks Robert Smith is trying to be like him and called him a “whingebag.” Looks related to having big hair.
When Morrissey said this, he believed that Smith would not clap back and wouldn’t say anything due to his sad melancholic music. But he was wrong.
Smith’s reply
Smith replied to him in an interview not too long after, saying he doesn’t like The Smiths either, stating “I just don’t like him and I think he’s very arrogant, mainly. He’s like a professional intellectual, it’s like the worst type of person.” He also says how he likes bands similar to The Cure (which should include The Smiths given the similarities they have) mentioning him liking the Cocteau Twins but not liking The Smiths and how “depressing” Morrissey is.
Later on, Morrissey replied to this, criticizing The Cure and their top hit album “Disintegration”. “At least we’ve only added a new dimension in crap, not built a career out of it.”
Their drama began to increase when Smith made an infamous statement, “If Morrissey says not to eat meat, then I’ll eat meat. That’s how much I hate Morrissey.” Smith said this around the time The Smiths album “Meat is Murder” came out in 1985 (Morrissey is also a vegan).
The drama finally subsides?
Later on in 2018, in an interview with NME, Smith said how he thought their feud never made any sense.
Then in 2019, Morrissey says “Oh, I never make my regrets small…If i can help it. Oh..Umm Robert Smith, I said some terrible things about him 35 years ago…but I didn’t mean them… I was just being very Grange Hill.”
After this apology In another interview with NME was asked if he saw Morrissey’s apology. “It was brought to my attention, yeah. It was slightly odd as I haven’t really had it at the forefront of my consciousness over the last 20 or 30 years. I don’t know. Even at the time I never quite understood what the problem was. It’s far from important now.”
After this, not much has been said between the two.
