People in schools are using AI for their tasks. For example, teachers are using AI for grading and creating assignments. The use of AI technology tools can improve class smoothness, reduce management loads, and improve school staff’s training. AI can potentially change education in many ways and support improved work results for students, too. Many school districts are exploring ways to use AI to assist students.
U.S. Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, said, “It drives personalized learning, sharpens critical thinking, and prepares students with problem-solving skills that are vital for tomorrow’s challenges. Today’s guidance also emphasizes the importance of parent and teacher engagement in guiding the ethical use of AI and using it as a tool to support individualized learning and advancement. By teaching about AI and foundational computer science while integrating AI technology responsibly, we can strengthen our schools and lay the foundation for a stronger, more competitive economy.” The U.S Department of ED is focusing on using AI to improve teacher training and student outcomes.
In many classrooms, the increasing fast rate of AI is causing serious concerns about the potential negative effects on kids and teens. One of the negative effects AI is having on students is that it is worsening their brain, causing them to feel less connected with adults at school. About half of students who were surveyed agree that using AI in class makes them feel disconnected from their teachers and staff. They are concerned that AI will worsen their thinking skills and research skills.
Researcher Rebecca Winthrop spoke about the negative effects of AI, saying, “When kids use generative AI that tells them what the answer is … they are not thinking for themselves. They’re not learning to parse truth from fiction. They’re not learning to understand what makes a good argument. They’re not learning about different perspectives in the world because they’re actually not engaging in the material.” The many ways to reduce the bad effects of AI are for schools to develop AI training and create guidelines that put limits on AI.
Using AI in school for your assignments as a student reduces critical thinking and skills, unless you only use it for feedback and checking grammar. Teachers are allowed to use AI for many of their tasks, such as plans, creating quizzes, and grading.
