The history of volleyball
Volleyball first started in 1895 and gained popularity in the 1940s. Because of its growing popularity, volleyball was first introduced as an Olympic sport in 1964.
The basics
The main goal of volleyball is to keep the ball from dropping and to score points by grinding the ball onto the other team’s side. You can try to force them to make errors and stop the other team from doing the same.
This game is organized into sets, typically five, where the first four sets are won by reaching 25 points and the fifth set is played to 15 points. Some games are organized into only three sets.
Six people are on each team and have to be in certain positions. They rotate clockwise. Serving the ball is starting the game, bumping is passing the ball, spiking is trying to slam the ball onto the other opponent’s floor, and there’s also saving, which is returning a hard driven ball.
Focus is important, including being involved, like calling out “mine” so teammates know when you’re going to take control of the ball.
Popular teams
The Nebraska Cornhuskers are known as one of the most popular women’s volleyball teams in the US. Nebraska has really loyal fans who are always in attendance at the games. According to an NBC News article published on August 31, 2023, “…the Nebraska Cornhuskers said they smashed the world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event after the match hosted at Lincoln’s Memorial Stadium drew more than 92,000 fans.”
Who invented volleyball?
Volley ball has been around for over 130 years. It was invented in 1895 by William Morgan, who worked with the YMCA. He was a physical education director from Holyoke, Massachusetts.
It was first named “mintonette” because the idea of volleyball blended qualities of tennis, handball, and basketball. Morgan wanted to create a game with less physical contact that could be played by people of all ages.
Opinions on volleyball
People say volleyball is a fast-paced, addictive game. It balances between intense physical plays like jumping and diving to the mental game of focus and participation. Volleyball is praised for boosting confidence and building teamwork, because it’s impossible to play without proper teamwork.
