AI is a new uprising type of technology that hundreds of millions of people are starting to use across the world. AI has its good and bad side to it, but now the big question being asked is whether it is good or bad for society.
On a positive side, AI can help people accomplish tasks quicker. It can help doctors diagnose patients, or even just help people complete everyday activities faster and easier. Mrs. Blasena, Journalism teacher at FMS, mentioned that she has used AI to help with personal tasks, like vacation planning. “I’d been searching for a new location within the United States to visit last summer, and after a few weeks of researching on my own, I was becoming frustrated at narrowing down a vacation destination. A simple Gemini search produced dozens of options that saved me from doing extensive additional research, so I can see why people use AI to save time and effort.”
People are starting to become more and more dependent on AI though. Instead of people doing stuff for themselves, like writing an essay or doing their math homework, they are turning to AI. People will use the AI on their phones or devices rather than doing the work themselves.
AI also gets information wrong. Sometimes when AI is trying to find a response, it gets its information from websites that have false information, which is a problem. Or it hallucinates, which means the AI generates totally made up information. There were two separate examples of hallucination in 2023 and 2025 when two different lawyers used AI for their case and the AI hallucinated. It made up a totally fake case, and both lawyers were fined $5,000 for it.
AI has a negative affect on students’ brains and test grades. There was a study done by Nataliya Kosmyna with 54 people between the ages 18 to 39. The subjects were all asked to write essays and were connected to a monitor that recorded their brain activity while they were writing. Students in the first group only got to use ChatGPT, another group only got to use Google, and the last group could only use their brain with no other assistance. The group that used ChatGPT had the lowest level of brain activity, and could barely recall their own essays.
