After these shows, the rest will be open to the public.
Bad Bunny is a Puerto Rican reggaeton artist and rapper who grew up in Vega, Baja Puerto Rico. His popularity has quickly grown since 2013 when he first started making music. He has made many songs and albums and has collaborated with many artists. In 2022, Bad Bunny’s “Un Verano Sin Ti” was the most listened to album on Spotify.
Bad Bunny’s newest album “Debi Tirar Mas Fotos” talks about the gentrification that is happening in Puerto Rico. Gentrification is when wealthy people come into a certain place and eradicate its culture by buying up property and making everything unaffordable to indigenous residents.
In his one song “Lo Que Paso A Hawaii” He states “Quieren quitarme el rio y tambien la playa quieren el barrio mio y que abuelita se vaya no, no suelte’ la bandera ni olvide’ el lelolai” (They want to take my river and my beach. They want my neighborhood and for grandma to leave. No, don’t let go of the flag, don’t forget the lelolai.) He is talking about the gentrification that is happening in Puerto Rico. Puerto Ricans worry a lot about the loss of their culture. In this same song he says, “Que no quiero que hagan contigo lo que le paso Hawai.”(I don’t want them to do to you what happened to Hawaii.) Some say that Hawaii has been the latest example of gentrification. This is due to the Maui fires that occurred in 2023. Gentrification has affected affordable housing in Hawaii, too. Wealthy people would come into Hawaii and buy property that was destroyed to build hotels. This would attract more wealthy people to come live there and make it even more expensive for the indigenous people to continue to live in their own cities and towns.
Bad Bunny’s new album is full of musical culture from Puerto Rico. He returned to his roots to make people aware of the harm of gentrification so it doesn’t happen in his homeland, on the island of Puerto Rico.
