In June 2025, there is an Ice Hockey event in the NHL and it is called the Stanley cup. Games one and two of the Stanley cup were in Rogers Place and games three and four were in the Amerant Bank Arena.
The Edmonton Oilers are the defending Western Conference champions, while the Florida Panthers are the defending Stanley Cup champions and Eastern Conference champions. This will be the first time since 2009 that the Stanley Cup Final features the same two teams from the previous year’s championship.
The Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup five times in the following years: 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1990.
In the first game of the 2025 Stanley Cup Final on June 4, 2025, at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Edmonton Oilers won against the Florida Panthers. The score was 4-3 in overtime. The game-winning goal was scored by Leon Draisaitl during the overtime period.
In the second game the Panthers dominated the Oilers winning by 5-4 in double overtime.
In game three, the Panthers won again and the score was 6-1 in a dominant and eventful game.
Edmonton Oilers defeated the Florida Panthers in overtime with a score of 5-4.
A big star that was on the team many years ago was Wayne Gretzky and a few years later, he became captain on the Oilers. A player that has to play up to Wayne Gretzky’s legacy is Connor McDavid.
Wayne Gretzky did lead the Edmonton Oilers to four Stanley Cup victories. He played with the Oilers from 1978 to 1988, during which time the team won in 1983-84, 1984-85, 1986-87, and 1987-88,894 career goals,1963 career assists,2857 career points,1487 career games played. Wayne Gretzky’s impressive trophy collection includes four Stanley Cups, nine Hart Memorial Trophies, 10 Art Ross Trophies, two Conn Smythe Trophies, five Lester B. Pearson Awards (now Ted Lindsay Award), and a Lady Byng Trophy. He also won the Lester Patrick Trophy for his contributions to hockey. This is why Wayne Gretzky is called the great one. This is the legacy Connor McDavid has to live up to.
McDavid has not yet won a Stanley Cup with the Edmonton Oilers. His career goals are 361, his career assist are 721, his career games played are 712, and his career points, 1082, are not nearly as many as Gretzky. Connor McDavid’s notable trophies include the Art Ross Trophy (5 times), Hart Memorial Trophy (3 times), Ted Lindsay Award (4 times), and Maurice Richard Trophy (1 time). He is also a seven-time NHL All-Star.
Wayne Gretzky played for four NHL teams: the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues, and New York Rangers, in that order. He began his NHL career with the Edmonton Oilers. Then, he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988. Later, he was traded to the St. Louis Blues in 1996 and signed with the New York Rangers in the same year. He retired from professional hockey in 1999.
McDavid played for the Erie Otters for three seasons before being drafted into the NHL. He was drafted first overall by the Oilers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and has played for them since. McDavid was not on as many teams as Wayne Gretzky was on.
Omari from FMS had this to say about the Stanley Cup of 2025: ”So far the series is going well and there are two good teams, the Oilers and the Panthers, and whoever wins the Stanley Cup are the winners of the NHL. I like the NJ Devils but my favorite team is the Montreal Canadiens. I think if the Oilers are going to win it’s because they have Connor McDavid and they are an overall very good team. I think if the Panthers will win the Stanley Cup like they did last year against the Oilers, it is going to be redemption for the Oilers to win because they lost last year to the Panthers.”
Mr. D also shared his thoughts. “In the first game of the Stanley Cup, the Oilers won a 4-3 overtime victory. Leon Draisaitl scored two overtime goals including the winning goal. In the second game, the Panthers defeated the Oilers in double overtime 5-4. Brad Marchand’s double overtime goal secured the Panthers win. Florida Panthers dominated the Oilers by winning 2-1 in the third game. Brad Marchand continued his strong performance with one goal. There was a huge brawl in the 3rd period that led to many ejections. The way the Panthers are playing, I think the Panthers will win, but if Connor McDavid turns the series around, maybe the Oilers will win the Stanley Cup.”
