Students and staff of FMS joined together during the first week of October to celebrate the annual Week of Respect and Inclusion. This week serves to recognize the importance of showing respect, to embrace social and emotional learning, to establish and foster a positive school climate, and to ensure that all students feel supported and included.
The week began on Monday, October 7 with “Color Unity”. Sixth graders wore white, seventh wore orange, and eighth wore blue to show unity with fellow classmates. Students defined the word “unity” in math classes and discussed its importance, as well as the consequences of being divided.
Tuesday, October 8 encouraged students to “Stomp Out Disrespect” by wearing their favorite boots to show that FMS students respect themselves and others. Science class conversations defined “respect” as well as “disrespect” and shared examples of each while emphasizing why respect is so important.
On Wednesday, October 9, students “Put a Cap on Bullying” by wearing hats to show that bullying will not be tolerated at FMS. In social studies classes, students defined terms like “bully”, “victim”, and “bystander” and discussed creative ways to fight bullying in school.
Thursday, October 10 showed how “Our Differences Unite Us” when students wore mismatched clothing, socks, shoes, or accessories to show that our differences make us special and unique. Language arts classes discussed what it means to be unique and why it’s important to embrace our true selves.
On Friday, October 11, we showed that “We’re All on the Same Team” by wearing our FMS gear or school’s colors of blue and white to show that we all belong to one FMS team.
