Exciting, riveting, nerve racking moments – every sport has them. However, not all are the same. You want one with the most? I have one for you… ice hockey! Shattering physicality, fights, fast gameplay, loud crowds, huge rinks, and more. Interested?
Well say no more! Let’s talk about the basics. There are five players and one goalie on the ice at most times, sometimes differentiated by penalties. There are three forwards, a left wing, a right wing and a center. There’s also two defenders: left and right defenseman. One goalie is on the ice for both teams, which is what I am! Jobs are pretty self explanatory. The forwards are the head of the attack. Defensemen are the first line of defense, however they see some goal scoring action too. Goalies are the last line of defense, and their job is to stop the puck. Although, there are usually two goalies on a team that rotate every game. There are three 20-minute periods, and the clock stops when the play does. Goals determine the game. A tie results in overtime. Penalties can also occur as the result of an infraction.
If you’re not yet motivated to play the sport, don’t worry, you will be. There’s multiple types of sticks, varying in height, weight, and flexibility. Obviously there are different equipment brands, suited for whoever you are. A normal team has two or three jerseys depending on if they’re playing at a home arena or visiting one. Just a normal sport essential. Contrary to some belief, closed ice rinks (which are most of them) will last the entire year. Yes, even through summer (assuming nothing malfunctions with coolant). Because of how fast the game is, fans are usually put through excessive nervousness that never stops, making it a thrilling experience to watch a game.
So what are you waiting for? The season starts soon…
