FMS instrumentalists were given a unique opportunity on February 16, 2024 when they visited Rutgers University in New Brunswick to attend a music clinic.  Mrs. Boulton arranged for the students to spend the afternoon with Dr. Julia Baumanis, Rutgers Assistant Director of Bands.

The students had recently been learning a new piece titled “Me” by Randall Standridge, which “confronts the emotional toll that bullying takes on individuals,” as described in Standridge’s musical catalogue.  Dr. Baumanis’ friendly and welcoming approach encouraged the FMS musicians to push beyond their boundaries and play outside of their comfort zones.  Her insightful feedback allowed the students to make immediate tweaks and adjustments that resulted in a harmonious and bold performance.

At the conclusion of the clinic, Mrs. Boulton offered nothing but praise for her students, recognizing that “…their ability to learn this piece in such a short amount of time is commendable, but their willingness to improve and push themselves even harder this afternoon is even more impressive.  They’ve really put in the effort this year and we are honored to have had this opportunity to learn from Dr. Baumanis today.”
