One Piece is Japanese manga series with a character named Kuma, who has a tragic backstory.
When Kuma was just a kid, he was kidnapped and enslaved in god valley with his family by the Celestial dragons. Later his mother was taken by the Celestial dragon. A couple days after that, Kuma’s dad was shot by a Celestial dragon right in front of Kuma.
The Start of the Story
When Kuma was a little kid in the Sorbet Kingdom of the South Blue, he was taken away with his family by the Celestial dragons. They took them because they had buccaneer blood and during that time the world government hunted those people down and enslaved them and sent them to god valley.
Once they arrived he was forced into the native hunting competition. It was a three week long competition where the Celestial dragons hunted them down with participants earning points based on the “prey” they eliminate. The winner can turn in those points to get prizes like devil fruits. (Devil fruits are fruits that give power to the person that eats them.)
During that, Kuma’s mother was taken into the native hunting competition and killed. Later Kuma’s dad was trying to comfort him by telling him stories of the sun god Nika, but in doing so, he was shot by a celestial dragon because he was being “too loud”.
Fellow classmate reacted to this by stating, “Kuma’s backstory was tragic. The saddest part of his backstory was when his dad was shot by the celestial dragon.”
Escape To Freedom
Kuma escapes the nightmare during the “The God Valley Incident”. This was when the Roger pirates, Maries, Holy Knights, and the Rock pirates went to god valley for all different reasons.
During the fighting, Kuma found Nikyu Nikyu no Mi (Paw-Paw Fruit). This allowed him to propel himself and others incredible distances, essentially teleporting them. With that power he saved about 500 lives including Ginny.
The Saddest Part of the Story
After that Kuma went back to his hometown to start a new life with Ginny. A few years later Kuma gets a daughter, and later his wife Ginny dies from Sapphire Scale. That disease is really rare and there was no cure for it. It develops after being subjected to experiments by the Celestial Dragons. Bonney, Kuma’s daughter, inherited the Sapphire Scales disease from her mother, Ginny.
Therefore Kuma took Bonney to egghead island to find a doctor. The doctor he found was Vegapunk. Vega told Kuma that if he wanted him to cure his daughter he would need to become a pacifista. In doing so he would be sacrificing his freedom, his membores, and his humanity. He has also become a cyborg/weapon for the world government. He was as well forced to become a warlord of the sea.
When I interviewed Arnav, he stated, “It was a tragic story. It almost made me cry due to it being so sad.”
