The Oscars, an annual award ceremony, was held this year on March 2, 2025 at the Dolby Theater in LA, California. They are meant to award and promote movies, and there are 23 categories, including best set, best makeup, best soundtrack, and best actress or actor. However you have to get chosen as a nominee first! The Academy of Arts and Sciences is the main group behind the creation of the Oscars.
This year, the main winner was the movie “Anora”. The Oscars are usually comedic and have a host making jokes on stage (this year was Conan O’Brien). There is also a live band playing music and performances by musical artists throughout the show.
You can watch the Oscars on ABC or other streaming services, like Hulu. The red carpet is always filled with celebrities and camera crews getting all the shots that they can. It is a truly magical experience, however, it is also controversial, as many people didn’t agree with the winners this year. The most popular and widely chosen nominees where “Anora”,”The Brutalist”, “I’m Still Here”, and “The Substance”.
Local resident Polina K stated, “I did not agree with the winners this year. I didn’t really think ‘Anora’ was that good to get so many awards! I also think that ‘The Brutalist’ is heavily overrated, as I watched it and thought it was boring. Hope next year’s Oscars make up for these mistakes!”
I also had the ability to interview Polina’s mom, Natalia, who added, “We can all agree that these Oscars weren’t funny. I didn’t like the way they got political and pointed out wars and other situations happening in the world. Although the Oscars were entertaining, I didn’t appreciate the way they were pointing out the Russia and Ukraine war.”
Even though many people thought the Oscars were controversial, they reached about 19.7 million viewers, mostly because it was accessible on Hulu. Not just that, but there was a boost in younger audiences too this year.
