Recently hit D&D-based game, Baldur’s Gate 3, started stress testing its patch 8 update and I’m here to talk about it, even though no one seemingly cares.
This update has three main features; photo mode, crossplay, and most interesting of all, a new subclass for each of the 12 main classes. But of course, what’s an update without some fandom controversy?
Recently, fans have been unhappy with the devs as they’ve been neglecting one of the origin characters, Wyll, and haven’t given him any more new content since launch. Given the fact this is supposed to be the last major update and Wyll is still a nothing burger when it comes to content such as cutscenes and personal dialog, many fans have accused the devs of racism. The reason for this being so is because Wyll is the only person of color character and his lack of content is very noticeable compared to all the other predominantly white companions.
The devs, AKA Larian Studios, have yet to respond to the fans accusations, which is very unlike them as Larian Studios is very responsive when it comes to fan displeasures.
The update itself is nothing too major, though many have been excited for crossplay to finally be possible, as it finally allows console and pc players to play together.
Along with crossplay there is also photo mode, for players to take pictures of in-game scenery, companions, along with themselves and other players.
Now the real stars of this update are the 12 new subclasses, as they add a variety of new cantrips and spells. Out of all 12 new classes, fans seem to be interested in the Death Domain cleric, as this subclass offers a new mechanic: Bursting Sinew (corpse explosion). This cantrip opens up a new way to deal with large crowds of enemies and gives people an excuse to start collecting corpses without having to be called a weirdo. Overall each subclass is unique in its own way and fans are very excited, myself included.
Despite all this, many fans still hope that this is not the last major update as Larian still has more polishing to do, like giving Wyll more content and maybe adding back some of the cut content they removed last minute. But, despite its flaws, Baldur’s Gate 3 is a great game that deserves more attention.
