Dr Pepper was first introduced in 1885 by Charles Alderton. Apparently Dr Pepper was originally created to taste like the smell of a drugstore, which is basically just combinations of fruit syrup flavors. It is the oldest major soft drink in America, followed by Coca-Cola one year later! From around 1885 to 1891, the drink could only be served at fountains or the drugstore, where the syrup was mixed with the carbonated water and served individually.
Dr Pepper does not have a period in the name because the Artesian Manufacturing and Bottling Company dropped the period in the 1950s due to a change in the logo’s font. It is named Dr Pepper after Dr. Charles Pepper, a Virginia doctor.
